In article <01bced59$11cf45c0$5e91a0cenopsamkenstein>, johnatnet-connect.netnopsam.this.by.hand says... ....<snip>... >Now I'm interested in putting Thor back on the road. I've been told by >several people that I could (and should) drop a 900 engine into the car. I >am capable of doing any work not requiring special SAAB tools. Has anyone >accomplished this? ...<snip>... I have a 1980 Saab 99 GLi with 133K on it. Nothing's wrong now, but if anything serious happens, I would love to put a H-engine in it to replace the original B-engine. 16-valves have been fitted to 99's before, but I suppose that if it's a "no special tools" job, it would have to be a non-turbo 8-valve...are the motor-mounts the same? And what about the transmission...would it be easiest to get the engine with the 5-speed transmission and put both in, as opposed to replacing the engine only and reusing the 4-speed? I would love to have a 5-speed - I've heard stories of blowing waterpumps on the interstate from driving a little too fast in 4th gear. If I said that I drove for 12 hours (about 800 miles) with the tachometer scarcely dipping below 4000 RPM, would you all say that was insane, or is that just barely approaching the limits of the now defunct 8-valve? Anyway, what are the going prices for 1) 8-valve H-block, 2) 5-speed trans, 3) both 8-valve and 5-speed as a package. - Chris Eling Virginia Tech Architecture
