Subject: Re: '98 Saab 900 - Dealer went ballistic

Sounds like Natalie did all the same research and was armed with exactly the same info as me. My dealer respected the work I had done (I don't know if my Y chromosome had anything to do with it) and seemed almost sad as he realized how much information I had. I wasn't sure if that was just an act to make me feel good, but hearing Natalie's experience makes me think it was somewhat legitimate. The price they offered me was higher than what I thought I should pay, but they never questioned my research. They just said that they needed to make their profit, and I could respect them for saying that. I actually started my search a few months ago for a 97 900SE Coupe which was invoiced $500 less than '98 and had $2500 incentive. Well, my dealer didn't have any on the lot but said he would try and find me one. Weeks went by without my hearing a single word. I just don't think he was real motivated to find me a car and transport it here. As soon as he got a few '98s on the lot, he seemed VERY EAGER to make the sale. He was very nice and courteous the whole time. Since the next nearest Saab dealer is 100 miles away, I ended up buying the '98. The dealer ended up with about the same dollars of profit as he would have had on the '97 but since the dealer cost on the '98 was $1500 higher ($500 higher invoice, $1000 lower incentive), his profit % was less than 5% so I thought it was a win-win. By the way, being a dyed-in-the-wool capitalist, I understand that the dealer needs to make a profit to stay in business. But I work hard for my money and I don't feel the need to give it away when I neither want to nor need to. A $100 here and there would make more difference to me than to the dealer.
