Subject: Re: '98 Saab 900 - Dealer went ballistic

Let me add my .01 (my opinions aren't worth much more, YMMV) Dealer relationship is KEY. I shopped around for my 93 900TCE as the market for them was not as strong as Saab as originally thought. One dealer didn't have one, the other took days to even talk to me about one (I was pretty young at the time, and I STILL get curb qualified when trying to buy a new car). Long story short: I ended up buying the car down in Maryland. Now I got a better deal, and a much better level of sales treatment, but while the car was under warranty it was hard as hell to get the two dealers in my area to go the extra mile. I know they SAY it doesn't matter, but it does. A large percentage of dealer profit does not come from a new car sale. Thankfully I do not drive the car much so it wasn't an overly strenuous experience. Dealers like you if you buy from them. They treat you better, do more when you need service-throw in perks as well. This to me is worth an extra 100 to 200 dollars. You will make that back over the service life of the car. There is only one dealer that treats me well even though I didn't buy from them-and they are a Chevy dealer in Croton NY!!! (shameless plug, I know-but they are great) -Gabe
