Subject: '98 Saab 900 - Dealer went ballistic

Hi All, I must share my Saab buying experience with you. I got a quote for a '98 Saab 900 SE 3-door from a car broker. Hmmm...not a really bad price, but after reading all my online resources and docs and seeing the $1,500 dealer incentive, learning about holdback, etc., etc., I figured I'd go to a local dealer and see what I could negotiate. I was, in fact, looking forward to it. I went for a test drive and upon returning to the dealership, my kindly, older salesman asked me what he could do to sell me a car. We sat down to discuss price. I kept telling him I had done my homework, during our test drive. As he was looking up the invoice prices I started reciting the invoice prices (base, auto trans., etc.) from memory. He wrote some numbers down and began to slide the piece of paper my way. "You forgot to subtract the $1,500 dealer incentive," I said. The tips of his ears started to get red by now. As he wrote down the $1,500 I then hit him with, "...and don't forget to subtract $960 for dealer holdback, and add back the advertising fee" NOW he was mad. He told me he would not even discuss holdback, that it was nonnegotiable and went to pay for the building, etc., etc. He then asked me what amount I willing to pay. I gave him an amount that was no more than 2% over true invoice and the number was $200 less than the quote I had gotten from my car broker. That did it. He jumped up, told me "goodbye.....go" and told me my offer was "ridiculous." He wouldn't even discuss my offer or talk about a counter offer. If he had even tried I would have worked with him. So, out the door I went, wondering if it was my knowledge of the pricing, my gender, or some combination that caused him to boot me from the showroom... I immediately called my car broker back and accepted her offer. Now the waiting begins as she told me it will take up to a month to get the car. Amazing experience!! Natalie (at) usa (dot) net
