It seems as though Americans, with the possible exception of those who live in very snowy, difficult terrain, have gotten away from snow tires in favor of "all season" tires. Laziness, perhaps, or unrealistic confidence in all season tires. I doubt Swedes try to get through the entire year on all season tires. Seems as though quite a few new Saabs come equipped with so-called "performance" tires, and those tires perform poorly in snow. On my '85, I did better after replacing them with Dunlops. And on my current Saab, a '91, I just replaced the fronts with Dunlop touring tires. I have vivid memories of slip-sliding around on Pirellis (sp?) in the '85 turbo. With better tires (even of the all season variety), I believe the Saab is among the most sure-footed cars on the road. BMW owners and even BMW salesmen have told me their cars are "not good in snow." On the performance issue, which is how this discussion began, I don't think the Saab turbo has anything to be ashamed of, and apparently neither do the magazine writers, many of whom are understandably fond of BMWs.
