I had the same (or very similar) problem on my 88 900. I tried a dealer and an independent shop and neither could sucessfully find the cause of the problem on the first attempt. I lived with the thunk for about a year and it progressively got worse until I asked the dealer to look at it again during a routine maintanence stop. They found the the ball joints were seriously worn and needed to be replaced. I had all the joints replaced, the problem went away and the car handles as good new.
