If you want to defog the windows in the winter, the fastest way to do it is to turn on the AC and crank the heat. The anti frost thermostat is set to turn the compressor off when the evaporator gets below 33 degrees to prevent icing. It should come back on when the temp reaches 43 degrees With a warm engine compartment, this happens even when it is below freezing outside, especially if recirculate is chosen. The low pressure switch in the receiver drier prevents the compressor from engaging when the refrigerant level is too low (about 40 psi on the high side), but that doesn't occur in a fully charged system. The only other temperature related sensor in the circuit is the overheat switch in the upper radiator hose and it cuts out the compressor if the engine were to overheat.
