Subject: 86 900 3dr 5sp, 96K punched front end, opinions? -LONG

Thanks to one of the stupidest members of our species who thoughtlessly ran a stop sign (BTW not me..), the front end of my fun little 900 got crunched last weekend. The impact was substantial (thankfully only minor/moderate injuries) the hood is now an A-frame, the front bumper is crunched, the grill is completely smashed and the left front quarter panel is pushed back about 12-15 inches. The radiator is toast as is the front relay box front left. The good (?) news is that the front wheels still spin, and I can still shift through all five gears. I dont' know for sure if there is drive train damage. Besides nicks to the front edges of the doors, and a bent antenna, there is no damage from the doors back. The adjusters have done an on-site assessment, and of course immediately totalled it. If it is to be repaired I will have to have it towed ($100 one-way) to my local saab experts (Scandia Autosport, Seattle) to check for drive train damage. Their over the phone estimate for just body work and radiator is already >$3500. NADA blue book is $2575, but rediculously low for this market right now. Now: this car has only 96K on the clock! IT has been my project car for the past year and has received (in the last 12 mo.): new clutch, new front brake calipers (both), new volt reg., full tune up incl cap, rotor, wires, new pwr antenna, new heater control valve and heater core, new head gasket, with valve train work (repl. tappet, adj. valves),new shocks, new R outer CV boot, new RF ball joint, new brake master cylinder, rebuilt clutch master cylinder. The question I pose to the group is thus: AM I crazy to think about repairing the body work at say $3500-$4000 or so as long as there is no drivetrain damage? For the experts: what specifically should I be wary of in such a repair i.e. hidden damage, things to check while doing the repair, etc. e.g. I know there is structural damage to the frontmost cross member.. The repaired car will carry the mark of a SALVAGE title so its future resale would be more difficult (rel unimportant) I wonder whether the repaired vehicle can give me another 100K as I would have expected prior to the crash... For those in the Seattle area: what have you seen 85-87 900's go for? anyone seen any with this few miles? Tasteful replies only welcome here to the newsgroup or preferably, personally to hauchnopsame.washington.edu Having escaped death/serious injury at the hands of others twice now, thanks solely to seat belts, I urge you all to use them, and drive soberly and safely. Regards to the group, and my thanks for your substantial assistance in the year's repairs listed above. -Kip Hauch hauchnopsame.washington.edu
