Subject: Re: SAAB repair -- Is it true what they say?

I have always driven and been enamored with Saabs-- having first driven a '91 Saab 96. I've always bested 200,000 miles on them by babying and maintaining them scrupulously. Trust me though, the 94 900 SE Turbo is the LAST one! It has been beset by major quality/ reliability problems. Blown radiator hoses, electrical glitches, replaced water pump, ac condensation leaks in the passenger compartment whic h took 4 trips to the dealer to resolve, upper strut mount failures which left me with no suspension (this problem manifested itself 1000 miles out of warranty, and the response I got from Saab was nothing short of arrogant. The dealer to his credit discounted the parts to me so I could make the repair myself, but still to the tune of $200.) Frankly, I think GM really screwed up a good car when they partnered with Saab. I also think that Saab as a company is on poor footing with lagging sales, and may or may not maintain a presence in the US depending upon the success of the soon to be introduced 9-3 model. It's just something to consider. The other thing to consider is high costs associated with parts that are frequently only available through dealers, and the relatively few mechanics who know and understand these cars. I never thought I'd consider buying a Japanese or American car, but for my money, the choice is becoming more clear.
