I just bought a '86 Saab 900 Turbo. It is a really nice car, in excellent shape inside and out. However, I live in Chicago, where to say the least, crime is a major factor. My previous car (a piece of crap '82 Jetta) was broken into THREE times AND I bought the car with no stereo (meaning, for those of you mathematically challenged, that the car had been broken into at least four times!). The last time they broke in despite there being no radio at all! (which didn't stop them trashing two locks and a window in the process). I have (since the Jetta) acquired a garage, which should significantly cut down on the crime attempts. However, I can't live in the garage, and I frequently haunt various Chicago night spots. Ok here's the point of this post: I am thinking about getting a car alarm put on the Saab. I called a local Saab specialist listed in Chicago (at SAABTech), and he chewed me out for wanting to put a car alarm in the Saab. He cited the fact that Saabs are extremely hard to steal (particularly with the ignition on the floor), no longer on the "hit list" of professional thieves (especially an 86), and mentioned the possible effects it could have upon my electric system (particularly considering the semi-shady reputation of most car alarm dealers). However, I don't believe that most of the car break-ins in a major city like Chicago are performed by "professional" thieves, but instead are more spontaneous crimes committed by young kids (the kind who would most likely just move onto another car rather than deal with the alarm) Setting aside the practicality issue of the alarm and it's use as a deterrent to break-in/major damage to your Saab, my questions are: 1) What are the experiences of others who have had car alarms installed in their Saabs (particularly older Saabs)? 2) Did you have electrical problems down the road caused (or exacerbated) by the alarm? 3) Anyone had bad experiences with installation? 4) recommendations of installers? how much? 5) repeat questions 1)-4) for remote unlock for my power locks Thanks for your time, Kevin kevin_gilbertnopsamleoburnett.com
