Hey Jeff I had the same problem about 4 years ago on my 85 900S. The only two solutions were to fix it for $3000.00 Dollars or get an used transmission for $1000.00 Dollars. I went for the used one. Now I haven't had any problems ever since and I do oil changes to it about every 20,000 miles using Mobil One Synthetic (it is the best, expensive though). My car now has 185,000 miles and the transmission is great. Good luck. Johnny 1985 SAAB 900S jaggnopsamrlog.com wrote in message ... I love my 1987 900S dearly. I have sunk quite a bit of money into repairs (gaskets, steering rack, water pump, exhaust, timing chain, etc.) and I don't have a lot of money to spend right now. The 5-speed transmission has always been a bitch (very clunky and temperamental), but now it's getting downright rude. Third gear "crunches" going in anywhere over 2000 rpm (unless you're VERY kind to it), and pops out when you decelerate. My mechanic said he can fix the third gear without replacing the whole transmission, but I just noticed that first gear is starting to do it too. QUESTION: Anybody else had this problem? Am I better off biting the bullet and replacing the transmission? Or should I cut my losses and get a newer car when I can afford it (and grin and bear it?). Also, how long have I got before all the gears start to go? (It's got 193,000 kms right now) Any help would be appreciated!
