I love my 1987 900S dearly. I have sunk quite a bit of money into repairs (gaskets, steering rack, water pump, exhaust, timing chain, etc.) and I don't have a lot of money to spend right now. The 5-speed transmission has always been a bitch (very clunky and temperamental), but now it's getting downright rude. Third gear "crunches" going in anywhere over 2000 rpm (unless you're VERY kind to it), and pops out when you decelerate. My mechanic said he can fix the third gear without replacing the whole transmission, but I just noticed that first gear is starting to do it too. QUESTION: Anybody else had this problem? Am I better off biting the bullet and replacing the transmission? Or should I cut my losses and get a newer car when I can afford it (and grin and bear it?). Also, how long have I got before all the gears start to go? (It's got 193,000 kms right now) Any help would be appreciated!
