I have a 1987 900S and while I agree with some of your comments (i.e. run away from the automatic), I think as long as you find a good independent Saab mechanic to thoroughly check out the car, it could be a good deal. However, when I bought my car, it was through a new Saab dealer (sold used), and I have copies of all of the original maintenance records. I found that the "corner dealers" tended to have the Saabs that the Saab dealers wouldn't touch. Probably for good reason. My advice is to get it checked out if you really have your heart set on it, but be aware that you will be looking at high maintenance costs (as you would with any 12 year old car). If you get it, search out a good indie Saab garage - stay away from the dealers or you'll go bankrupt.
