Subject: Re: The Worst Car I've Ever Owned

When the new style 900S first came out I bought one from an Oldsmobile/SAAB dealer in Southern California. Things started going wrong immediately, for example window trim started coming off and the dealer's approach to fixing them was to use progressively larger hammers until everything stayed together. There were rattles and squeaks all over the place, and a few problems with the V6. I traded the car in elsewhere a few months later. I always regretted the experience because the seats were amazingly comfortable and adjustable, the filtered window glass was great in the summertime, and the car was generally so fun and manageable. This past year I bought a new 900SE from a Cadillac/SAAB dealer in Northern California, and the experience has been completely different! The car seems to be better put together and the service from the dealer (mostly just routine maintenance) has been fine. The 2 or 3 things which needed attention were done at normal service time. One part for the brake system did take a while to get, but the dealer gave me a convertible to drive during the wait (Zowie!). I think the moral of the story is (a) don't buy too early in the model run and (b) choose your dealer with a lot of care. This isn't exactly a revelation, in fact it is old advice. But when you are dealing with a captive (relatively) low volume import like SAAB it seems to be even more important. - Bob
