Subject: Re: Are Saabs reliable?

Everyone has different experiences, but in general Saab has NOT topped the lists for quality and problem-free ownership. Mine has been in the shop no less than 11 times in 14 months ('97 900S) for non-routine work, and is currently the subject of a lemon law claim for very, very dire engine problems. Others that I've known say they're generally reliable once all the niggles are sorted. Older ones seem more reliable than newer ones, and frequently go a quarter million miles (it'll take a few years to see if newer ones can go that far with any consistency). Maintenance costs are on the high side for the entire industry, but probably about average, give or take, for the higher end European makes. There have also been some nightmares with Saab Customer Service expressed as of late, specifically with regards to damage incurred in the International Delivery Program. My experience with Saab C/S on my Lemon Law claim has been good so far, but it's not sorted yet. I'll reserve judgement until the final verdict (as such) is in, but from what I've heard from others, this point alone might be a reason not to buy a Saab. I mean there have been some REAL nightmares! I'll keep the group posted on my findings, and even post all the gory details if someone so desires. Also be aware that they're actively shrinking their dealer base, which has posed some real problems with people being able to get service without taking a full-blown holiday to the "local" dealer. However, in my extensive personal searches, nothing in the money is close to a Saab in overall product feature set and value (excluding any service/reliability issues from the value equation, if you can do that). It's, in my opinion, the best mix of performance, sportiness, luxury, safety, status, and price. Not excelling in any particular area, but not faltering in any either. Plus, it's got a great cult following (i.e. this group) that transcends the physical realities of the car to add value (if you're into that sort of thing, that is). Plus, it's interior and exterior styling are definitely unique...which is a selling point for me and a lot of Saab buyers who are fed up with the egg-shape-and-starter-on-the-steering-column paradigm. Assuming my Lemon Law thing works out without undue stress and attorney involvement, I'll probably buy a 9-5 in the summer and have no regrets. Take that for what it's worth. Good luck with your search! Scott campbellnopsamraccess.com Solomander wrote: > > Hello, all. I am considering leasing a 1998 900SE convertible. What has > everyone's experience been with this car?
