I had a similar problem with my 86 Turbo. Also had a lot of trouble getting it diagnosed (this was three years back so my memory of the specific parts is weak). Turned out to be a combination of a fuel sensor (mass sensor?) and computer card (also related to fuel, I think). Replaced both and it hasn't died on braking at the stoplight (or just idled off to nothing) since.
