Subject: Re: 5th gear balks after long run ('93 900)

I had the same problem with an '89 900. The shifter can get out of adjustment. The dealer adjusted it and it was fine for about 3 days, then started again. After 2 more adjustments, it was OK. There seemed to be a tradeoff between easy selection of 5th, and getting the reverse lockout to work. Another possiblilty on the older design shifters is that the locating spring has badly corroded or broken. It can be replaced. > ..........after a long run 5th gear becomes very balky, to the extent that it's sometimes > impossible to engage it.
