Subject: Re: Looking for info on APC

It's a volkswagen with a 1.6l turbo-diesel engine. You can read all about it on: - VW Golf GTD: http://weber.u.washington.edu/~jaker/gtd I'd like to get rid of "boost creep" and boost inconsistencies between gears a conventional wastegate-boost controller can allow. The Saab APC system may be a great way to get electronically regulated (and adjustable) boost at an affordable cost. I've heard of a Volvo turbo-diesel owner using Saab APC (which is a sister engine to the VW-Diesel) I've found some good info from previous posts and searches on the web. Can anyone verify or add? Apparently, the APC system was started on the '83 900, they made some changes in '86; or at least the brain was moved from under rear seat to engine compartment. The components are: "black box" (brain), wastegate solenoid + air hose plumbing, a couple sensors (intake manifold pressure sensor and knock sensor are my guesses; are these right?) Already found out about the internal "P", "F", and "K" trim-pot adjusters: "Pressure", "Fallback rate", and "Knock sensitivity" Cool. Does anybody know if the unit will function without a knock sensor? (I've got a diesel which either is not prone to detonation, or thrives off detonation, depending who you ask ;-) so anyway, I probably would try to get it working without the knock sensor. I suppose if I could find a used donor car that would be ideal; I could just start examining the system and getting the parts I need. I'm in the Seattle, WA area, so anyone have any leads send them my way please. My other idea was to go to a saab dealer and look at what their parts dept. lists for the parts, and take notes. I already know of Carter Volkswagen/Saab in Ballard, WA (they are very helpful there) BTW, do the APC solenoids have a lifetime? thanks for any help, Jake danj <dannopsamorama.com> wrote in article <6jg2ca$4p8$1nopsamrnews.com>... > what year is your car? > dannopsamorama.com > Jake Russell wrote in message > <01bd7eee$f7db42e0$3bac8e8cnopsamer.u.washington.edu>... > >Hey guys, > > > >I'm interested in upgrading a mechanically-controlled (wastegate) > >turbocharged engine with electronic boost management using a Saab APC > >controller.
