If you go back another 10 years to the mid-60's, before synthetics, the big name on the block was Castrol. Sure, and Gulf was around then, too. Castrol is decent non-synthetic oil. Keep in mind that Castrol is a marketer, with ZERO refineries of their own. Today, Castrol is still around, and Porsche comes factory filled with Mobil 1. Quaker State put out a guarantee on their oil, too, just after they turned out stuff from two plants with the wrong additive packages and a bunch of engines got trashed. Most folks never realized it was truly an oil problem--- The Noack Volatility test measure is a standardized ASTM (now that the US folks have adopted it) which tests the evaporation of oil under high temperatures. Most American oils do NOT pass this test. For 15W-40, as an example, the European (ACEA) standard is 13%. >>I just want the best protection without spending an arm and a leg. If you want the best protection, then I recommend you use AMSOIL. Next would be Mobil 1, then about any of the other synthetics (with Pennzoil probably bringing up the rear). I venture to say that your Saab will high higher wear metal after 3000 miles than my Saab will have after 10,000 on same oil. Last report showed 12 ppm iron, 6 copper, 8 aluminum--and additive package still strong after 19.700 miles on oil with 1 filter change in middle.
