Dick, You mentions Amsoil being around for the last 25 years. That takes us back to 1973. If you go back another 10 years to the mid-60's, before synthetics, the big name on the block was Castrol. I had several friends with MGBs, MG Midgets and Triumph TR-7s, that came from the factory with Castrol in the crankcase. At that time Castrol had a guarantee that as long as the oil and filter were changed at recommended intervals, the engine was warrantied against oil related failure. I don't know about the Noak standards, but having driven overseas, I am fairly confident that the motor oil sold by Shell, Exxon, Castrol and few others is very similar, if not the same as the oil sold here. Most of the European countries have moved to unleaded gas, so the mechanical differences between those sold there and hear are less and less. If someone is doing a lot of highway driving, it is very different than someone doing a lot of stop and go and short distance. Whether we are talking conventional or synthetic, the stop and go and short run environment puts more stress on the engine and the oil. I listen to Pat Goss and John Davis. They give synthetic oil its due. They have mentioned Amsoil and Mobil 1. They used to push Militec-1, until Trak Auto took over sponsorship of his show, and he started pushing that Tri-bo Tech junk. I would not use that stuff on a bet, nor Slick 50 which cost me an engine in 93. I am like many others. I just want the best protection without spending an arm and a leg. You can tout long intervals between oil changes, but when something goes wrong with a customers engine or transmisson because they opted for synthetics and longer intervals, who is going to hold their hand, as it reaches for their wallet or purse.
