Since I drive almost exclusively in town, I change engine oil (Mobil 1) + filter every 4000 km. Some (okay, most) might consider this excessive, but my eight-year-old engine is in excellent shape, and I know I'll never be faced with a situation that makes me think, "Ah, I should have changed my oil more often." The reason "better safe than sorry" has lasted as a popular expression for so many years is that it's SO TRUE. You can spend a little more time and money now and ensure a good and long life for your engine; if you think of your car as a long-term investment, then it's definitely a sacrifice worth making. I just love my car too much to take any chances with her preventative maintenance. Roxi (& Artemis, '90 900 turbo, whose engine oil is always very, very clean, indeed)
