After letting the engine sit for a day, restarting it and running it for 15 minutes, all abnormal noises went away. Evidently the valves (this is a 16 valve) DID hit the pistons , but not so far as to bend any. I think the collision compressed the lifters farther than normal causing them to stick temporarily. I also checked with Scandia Autosport here and they acted like that was no problem either. I sure am happy to have not damaged the engine.
