On my old 1984 900 (now gone) I had the same sort of problem except that on mine the valve broke so it was always open (heat on). No amount of turning the valve at the pipe would change it. So what I did for a few years is I bought a U shaped piece of copper pipe. Each fall I would pull the two hoses leading into the firewall from the engine compartment and just plug in the U-tube (so the coolant never got into the heater valve). Then in spring I would just take off the U-tube and plug it all back into the firewall. Of course it would suck when you got that Indian Summer day in November or that cold snap in April, but it cost me all of a couple bucks and worked well enough for a few years.
