I find that although WD-40 is sold as a lubricant (which of course it does well) it also is very effective of cleaning things of water and heavier oils and greases, then it sort of evaporates away since it is so thin. So I often use WD-40 to clean things up and get them moving again, THEN I add back a little oil for a bit of a better long term solution.
