Subject: Starter info?

Hello. I have an '84 900S with a intermittent starter problem. It never seems to do it when I have a technician look at it, so I'm trying to troubleshoot it myself. Sometimes I go to start it and everything happens that should happen except the starter doesn't even try to turn. Lights come on, fuel pump comes on, etc. Sometimes I can just let it sit and try it later and it'll work. Anyhow, I'm currently looking at the wires to the starter. Can someone tell me what the purposes of the 3 wires do? The main red wire from the battery is fairly obvious. Then there are two smaller wires coming from a bundle that stretches across the engine. These wires originate near the fuse box... there's a little plug with yellow wires that is somehow associated with the starter wires (which are NOT yellow). My understanding is that the smaller round part on the starter is a solenoid, and that it closes a circuit that would energize the main wire from the battery and turn the starter. What do those two smaller wires to the solenoid do, what should I read there with a multimeter when, and how do they correspond to the wires on the plug up by the fuse box? *** PLEASE CC: REPLIES TO MY EMAIL *** Thanks in advance for your help on this... the problem is very frustrating because I never know when my car is going to strand me, and I'm not always in an easy position to pop-start it! ----------------------- Scott I.
