Subject: Re: traditional window probs

[Posted and emailed] The window problems may result from bad motors, stuck regulators, burnt switch contacts, etc. From what I've read and seen, the switch contacts are the most frequent culprit. Look at www.tsn.net ("The Saab Network") website for lots of discussion on this and other Saab problems. Here's something I wrote a while back on the subject that might be of interest to you: # On the 9000 (don't know about the 900), one first removes the two bolts # holding the window to the regulator, and gently lowers the window into # the door. Then remove the three nuts that fasten the motor and the two # that hold the regulator arms to the door. This is from recent memory, # but I think it's accurate. # # But, before you do all that (like I did), do this first (if you haven't # already): # # Jumper the regulator motor (while it's still in the door) to your car # battery. See if it works now (one polarity to go up, the other makes # the window go down). # # I made the mistake of checking that I was getting 12 Volts to the # regulator motor with the switch depressed, but didn't think that the # switch contacts might be so burned that little current was actually # able to get through. After removing and reinstalling the window # regulator, I then removed, opened, and recleaned the switch contacts # in the console, which "solved" the problem. # # BTW, if you haven't already cleaned your switch contacts, do NOT use a # wire brush or rotary tool wire wheel to clean them, just buff carefully # or use some electronic contact cleaner. Otherwise you will apparently # remove the silver? gold? plating that is on the contacts and they will # burn even faster and even worse than before. How do I know this? And, another one: # Window switch contacts, maybe. You must disassemble the switch to see # this, however they do pry apart with a bit of care. Be especially # careful of the tendency for older plastic to tear, the sides of the # switch cases are rather thin and flexible. It requires something like # an Xacto knife blade, slipped between the two pieces of the case, to # release the locking tabs (two on each side). Be careful to not lose # the pieces when you open the case, there will be a couple of rocker # contacts that just sit on top of the base contacts - see how they are # normally installed so you can put them back later. As for cleaning the # contacts, I am not sure what the best way is. My experience has been # that using a rotary tool with a wire brush gets the contacts nice and # shiny, and the switch works great for a couple of weeks, then they are # burned again. Some replies to my own questions indicated that I may # have removed a special coating (gold? silver?) on the contacts by my # abrasive cleaning method. You might try just cleaning with an # electrical contact cleaner (chemical cleaning fluid). New switches # cost around $50 each I think.
