Dave, I went through this in May with my 87 9000S. My compressor clutch went just after Mother's Day. I ordered a remanufactured compressor from Impex Distributors, 1-800-736-3550, www.zstarr.com/impex. The compressor, including shipping my order to me and returning my old one for my core charge, was under $310. Impex is located in Maryland. I ordered my compressor on a Tuesday. It arrived that Wednesday morning. I went to API in Odenton to have the compressor, a new receiver/drier, expansion valve and one pound of freon for less than $400. It cost me less than $670. I stayed with the R-12, since my system had a pound and half, when it was evacuated. If you push the recirc button, you can turn that off. The A/C is still working.
