Subject: Re: Odometer stopped working

Ed, I have an '89 900S that had the same problem. My mechanic told me the plastic gears break, especially with frequent resetting of the trip odometer (bad design I think!). Occasionally it would work for a while then stop, usually when the trip odometer rolls through from 999.9 to 000.0. Bad design #2 - there's no way to disable the trip odometer without disabling the car odometer. Bottom line, about a $500 repair. Couple hundred to the local shop to tear it out and reinstall it. And $300 to have a VMO repair facility somewhere in Texas. They can fix the odometer at it's current reading or roll it forward to an estimated reading, your choice. Hope this helps. John Gardner
