Two months ago I bought an '82 900s and aside from a lot of little things wrong I noticed that it was running pretty hot. Similar to someone elses heat problem I noticed that it was ok on the highway, but in town it seemed like forever for the fans to kick in. After re-reading my Haynes manual I though I'd go with the cheapest solution. The coolant keeps its cool under pressure so if there is a leak, even a pin hole leak where only steam escapes(so you may not notice a puddle) the engine will run hot. I shelled out $5 for a new expansion tank cap, and it was much better! Later I did see a hairline crack in the old cap. I still think it runs a little hot but, my Saab friend assured me that in the weather we've been having, high 80's low 90's, they usually run with the temp guage pointing between 2 and 3 o'clock, the fan comes in at 2 o'clock but lately it hasn't gotten that hot.
