Subject: Coolant/Antifreeze Voltage and Choices

BTW, this article, "What You Don't Know About Your Cooling System Could Be Trouble", is online at http://www.motortrend.com/oct98/cc/cc_f.html The sidebar article "Does Your Coolant Pass The Test" says to measure the voltage of your coolant. I just measured mine, and it is about -160 millivolts (i.e., it is below ground potential). So it looks like I'm OK on the electrolysis problem. The main article says that Havoline and Prestone have a silicate- and phosphate-free long-life antifreeze, with the Havoline version also being sold as GM Dex-Cool. Anyone have experience using these on Saabs? They sound similar to the Mercedes Benz factory coolant recommended earlier in this newsgroup and in http://www.townsendimports.com/cooling_system_folder/coolingsys.htm In Saab parts database, there is: P/N 02 08 991 Coolant, $16.00 list P/N 02 48 583 Antifreeze, $ 8.60 list (dealer charged me $12!) Anyone know what the difference is? My car originally came with orange coolant. Was this the first part # above, and is it phosphate-free like the Mercedes Benz one? Is the second part # the usual green ethylene glycol stuff?
