Subject: Re: Saab V-6 reputation

I had a '94 900SE V-6. The engine was a wonderful performer -- great low-end torque, very smooth, and eager to wind past the red line. However, its reputation was smeared by the requirement to change the timing belt every 30,000 miles after there were several early failures. Saab will replace it free at 35, 65, and 95K, but after that it will be the owner's responsibility to bear the cost. My engine also had 2 water pumps replaced (first one under a "service bulletin" and second one because the first dealer apparently botched the job), and a transmission oil leak that almost ran the manual gear box out of oil (they "couldn't find a leak" the first time I reported it). I had to have the serpentine belt replaced, too. Routine maintenance was no longer a "do it yourself" job, either -- the rear spark plugs were damn near inaccessible! What it did was turn a car with a reputation for longevity into a car that would be a known maintenance burden. Who would want an additional $400 repair bill (added to the $450 for the major service) every 30K miles? I traded mine in for a '98 900S turbo, and only got $11,500 trade-in value. I don't know if I even would have been able to sell it myself... --------------------- John R.
