Subject: 91' 9OOOS,in for the long haul?

Recently, I went from a Mazda Rx-7 to my first Saab. It's a 91' 9000s 2.3 with auto trans, and 89,000 miles. Unfortunately,it started making a metallic rattle sound at low RPM and idle. On top of this, it whines. The shop I took it at said the rattle was in the torque converter and the whine was the front transmission hydraulic pump. In NG's opinion does this sound accurate? Cost for the repairs=$1,300 installed. Also, after I bought the car, I have heard that Saabs have horrible transmissions and approx. 80% need repair after 90,000 miles. Is this true and if the repairs I have described are made, will my 9000 be OK for years to come. My previous car had an engine that died, I don't want a car that will be riddled with problems in the future. Your input is much appreciated. SCBJ
