Subject: Re: Looking for 8V intercooler kit

John <johnnopsam16.com> wrote: : I think saab have been intercooling for economy rather than performance : for the last 15 years. That's possible, but I have never heard that idea before. Why would an intercooler improve economy? As you've said, the airflow is poor with all the additional plumbing, so what accounts for the better economy? Everything I have ever heard about intercoolers says that their purpose is to allow cooler, and thus denser air to be packed into the cylinders...for the purpose of producing more power. The lower temperature of the intake air supresses detonation, and so higer levels of boost can be utilized. If I could get 1 or 2 more pounds of boost, I would be very happy with the intercooler mod. : You may run out of fuel with more boost on an 8V - what Co % are you : running on? 2.5 - 3% is about right. This contradicts your statement that the intercooler is for economy. If the intercooler produces better economy, then why would fuel be a problem? Couldn't it be the case that the intercooler produces more power, and that takes fuel? : One word of warning - those H type cylinder heads are prone to cracking : and pilling on the boost is one sure way to do this. Again, it sounds to me like the intercooler will allow more boost, which is what I want. I don't really care about blowing up the engine. This is a disposable car: after it's broken, I'll go buy another for an equally trivial amount of money. : Trust me I have done what you want to do and it does all fit but if you : are looking for a big power hike you may be dissapointed. I'm not really looking for a big power hike. The power of this engine is at the point where I'm just looking for a little bit, and then I promise I'll be happy ;-) I really do appreciate your comments, John, and I'm sorry if I'm a little argumentative, but I have a great need for everything to make complete sense. I have a lot of experience in the amateur modification of engines to produce more power, and my previous car ('85 900T) taught me a lot about turbos and intercoolers before it blew up ;-) Rob
