It's very simple really. Any internal combustion engine is a device to convert the energy contained in gasoline molecules into heat and then into mechanical energy. The primary limit on their varying ability to do this is their ability to ingest the other necessary ingredient in theprocess... oxygen. Air. Pumping gallons of gas into the cylinders is easy. Sucking air in huge volumes of air is harder because atmospheric pressure is only 14 pounds/sq.. That limits the rate at which air will rush into a cylinder with a descending piston (perfect vacuum). Thats why "big" engines make power easier than "small" engines...they can pump more gallons of air/min. (you need to pump 9000 gallons of air through your engine for every 1 gallon of gasoline!!) A turbo charger is an exhaust gas driven supercharger. An air pump. It has the ability to draw huge volumes of air from the atmosphere and cram it into your engine. Now you can squirt a proportionally larger volume of gasoline in with it and ,PRESTO, little engine makes power like big engine. There are complications of course. Even with the reduced compression ratio of the SAAB turbo engine vs. the "normal" engine, it would easily self-destruct without the APC system to defeat high compression preignition. The SAAB has an inherent advantage in ability to withstand turbo charging; it used to be a V8!! All the stressed bearings were designed for "big" engine forces. woof toastynopsam.vipmail.com wrote in article <36204f23.10794872nopsam.ime.net>... > can someone explain to me the exact function of the turbo charger and > how it works? i keep hearing different things from different people > and they are confusing me and i would like to tie them to the back of > my boat and keel haul them.
