How did you measure the amp output? Most household multimeters will not measure large amperages. Is it possible you're getting 17 VOLTS out of the alternator (possibly because of a failed internal voltage regulator) and your battery has an internal or single-cell failure (possibly caused by the overvoltage) that causes it to go dead?
