Subject: Re:Bad cold start, stumbles ...UPDATE

Thanks to all: This has been quite a reaffirmation in my fellow Homo Sapiens! To Contribute, here's what's transpired: The warm stumbling was definitly a spark-problem. The engine would warm up, all is well, then suddenly rough running, wild tach, and eventually dies. WARNING! BAD NEWS FOLLOWS! If you do not have KNOWN GOOD PARTS, the ONLY way to really find out what's wrong is to bite the bullet and begin replacing EACH of the parts in your electronic ignition. I thought it was the coil, (Bosch=$97, cheapie=$9.99 I do not reccommend the cheapie, I've been told the original Bosch coils almost NEVER go bad.) Then it APPEARED as if the ign. module might be it. ($129 from Beck Arnley) Now it looks like the distributor ($129 used from Mile High Body in Denver, but this part is NOT TESTED, and thus I'm probably going to have to buy new at nearly $300) The last part (I HOPE) is the Ign. Amplifier in the fusebox ($80). One option I'm told is that if you have a friend with an identical ign system (in the 86 900s, that means 86 & 87 900s ONLY!) and then swap parts between them. I don't know a anyone THAT well: everyone I know has watched this simple problem balloon, and avoids me like the plague. CONCLUSION: If your strobe indicates a flaky spark, with dropouts, get a good manual and try to diagnose it according to a manual. (Robert Bentley is better than Haynes, http://carlounge.com/books/makes/saab/manuals.htm ) But the results from the Haynes manual are rather ambiguous, hence why the parts have to be popped one at a time. Now my cold-start problems will wait for the car to even cold-start! Cheers Ben
