The sound from the tranny is a high whining sound,
produced by a worn needle bearing on the input shaft. This bearing runs
directly on the shaft, without a bearing ring or 'race'. It wears
'ripples' on the shaft, making the sound. It can only replaced as a
compete set of shaft+bearing. (expensive; US$600, if still available at
all)
You can still use the car for a long time in this condition
but it will get worse. Make sure there is enough oil in the
transmission.
