Subject: Re: Where to mount rear speakers?

It is possible to install 6.5" speakers in the rear side panels(I have an 87 coupe and recently did this installation.) It takes quite a bit of work to remove the rear panels and properly cut holes, but it's well worth it. The stock 4 by 10 speakers and their location is horrible. I used Infinity reference series 6.5" speakers, make sure you purchase a speaker with a shallow mounting depth, check the Crutchfield car stereo site for speaker mounting depths. Many installers are unaware that there is sufficient clearance, to mount 6.5's. If you plan on doing this yourself, remove the rear panels, and use the provided template to cut holes in the panels. Cut the hole in the top portion of the panel, but as close to the middle arm rest area as possible. If you cut the hole too close to the top of the panel, you will have some clearance problems, there is a piece of sheet metal that may get in the way. You will have better results with an electric saw, thin blade. The panel is very thick, it takes awhile to cut the holes out, but the end result is well worth it. You get much better bass response, since the enclosed area behind the panels acts as a baffle, and enhances the bass, in my opinion. You may also want to consider the new JBL Decade speakers, they have even a lower mounting depth and are cheaper. Good luck, Ed
