In fact Audi and Volkswagen have had and, to a degree, still do have lots in common. Actually all 1.8T engines and gearshifts made by VW-Audi-Porsche Concern are being stuffed into A3, A4, A6, VW Golf, VW Bora (Jetta in N.America - how boring and uncreative is this dealer's conservatism), VW Passat. Years back these lines did share more parts, including body panels, seats, etc. We call it on N.American continent "badge" engineering. Who knows, maybe this innovation was pioneered by Germans? On the other hand 1.8T engine by Audi/VW works best in a high-end Audi A3 hatch, completely damned by N.Am. dealers. Too bad for Audi, lots of joy for Japs.
