I had/have what sounds like the same problem, engine almost dies then rev's up then almost dies.... and finally runs OK. My problem got progressively worse. The first fix was for the dealer to put in hotter plugs. SAAB has a TSB on this. My dealer didn't know anything about the TSB so you may have to tell your dealer about it. That didn't fix my problem so SAAB suggested a vacuum test (for leaks). I'm guessing that test was negative, because they are sending the ignition control unit (?) back, presumable sweden, for reprogramming. The dealer said that there is a software update for this unit that better controls it's operation and is designed to stop surging at idle, and hot & cold start problems. The unit was FedEx'd yesterday (12/23) to SAAB so I don't know if this is the final solution. The fact that they have a software update designed to fix this, suggests that this is a known problem. Hope this helps. At least it gives you some avenues that your dealer can try. Your dealer should talk to SAAB's Houston service rep. I'll post again with the final solution when this is all over.
