Subject: Auto trans fluid/final drive fluid/Difference?

While attempting to change my engine oil(87 900S auto), I mistakenly opened the auto transmission drain plug. It was very cold, and not much fluid drained out. I finally found the correct engine drain plug, and changed the oil. But my manual states that there are two drain plugs for the transmission, one for the Auto trans fluid(the one I opened), and another for the "final drive" fluid. What's the difference between these two, the manual is kind of vague. Thanks for any info.
