Yes, you can do it, and you're in prime position to do so.
The one thing that will be somewhat difficult to swap in is the APC
unit that the '84 has, while your S has no provisions made for
it. Check out
http://www.teleport.com/~bertram/volvoapc/index.shtml
for some good info on how you can install the APC system from the
'84 in an "aftermarket" fashion.
Other than that, swap the whole thing in. Make sure you take
the fuel pumps along with it. And the exhaust.
