1) Are you sure that they are not referring to research octane number (RON),
which is always higher than "road" octane number [(RON+MON)/2] used in the
States?

2) Even if that is road octane number, it doesn't mean that it's not
overkill.  Your car may very well run just fine with 87 or 90 octane
gasoline, but you do not have a choice since it's not available.
