In perfect conditions, it would form nothing but CO2 and H2O, which would then blow out of your tailpipe. In "real" conditions, fuel doesn't oxidize completely and puts out both unoxidized molecules and partially oxidized molecules. Partially oxidized molecules include carbon monoxide, and the output of these is higher in cold weather. So what they do is to formulate gasoline that has a higher content of compounds that are ALREADY partially oxidized, such as ethers and alcohols. This so-called "oxygenated" gasoline then has a better chance of becoming completely oxidized upon combustion. However, these additives yield less energy during combustion than ordinary gasoline molecules. Hence your reduction in gas mileage. Bob
