In 1987 (and 1988, for that matter) the check engine light is incredibly stupid. About the only things it will respond to are severe mixture problems or disconnecting the O2 sensor or air mass meter. What I'm betting is that your air mass meter is old and either damaged or that its connections are and under heavy load it's getting some extra vibration which is pushing those connections beyond their breaking point. The easiest thing to try is to swap out the AMM with a known good one and see if that relieves the problem. You can also try disconnecting the wiring harness that goes to the AMM and make sure they are all clean; same goes for the O2 sensor. If your car has problems idling in the morning and/or stutters at all on acceleration, suspect the AMM. -Justin
