Subject: Re: 900 SE 6 - any good?

my 95 900SE V-6 just had its 95K scheduled maintenance with the same result as all services prior: no problems with this engine. i have loved it from the very minute i drove it off the showroom floor in 11/94. it has been as problem-free as my 86 900S 16-valve. to me, it seems the problem with the v-6 is more political: saab purists have turned their noses up at all things labeled "gm." they don't like the reality that if gm hadn't stepped in and saved saab automotive from financial obliteration, the only saabs on the market today would be ancient 900's and 9000's, and we'd be paying out the ass for service. i believe the saab marketing people could smell a revolt, and stopped offering the v-6 because long-time saab customers want their marque to appear as gm-free as possible. face the fact that selling cars is as much a matter of marketing as it is engineering. my advice would be to make up your own mind after driving both engines. and embrace the reality that sooner or later, all engines will need a repair or two. saab is a great car, and a good company. i'll probably buy saabs the rest of my life if they stay in business. (to check the accuracy of this opinion, read this ng and you'll probably find that most bad press on the v-6 is coming from the saab purists, while most v-6 owners themselves think the engine is fine, and will report that their experience has been good. you'll also find plenty of turbo engine problems reported, but nobody's trashing the entire class of turbo engines...) stuart kunkler cincinnati, oh 86 900S 125K when traded 95 900SE (viva la V-6!)
