The reason why is how the CD changer comunicates with the radio head. They are connected via a sort of LAN called the I-bus. The CD changer also has to be "married" to the car with a Tech II. This is a security feature. Once the CD changer is "married" to the car, it can not be used with any other car until it is first "divoriced". The radio head is the same way and this means no more radio code to put in after the battery goes dead and is disconnected. Your only other option is to get a CD changer that uses a RF modulator. This system attaches to the radio via the antenna. To listen to the CD changer, you tune the radio to the CD changer frequency and listen to it just like a radio station. The disavandage is that there will be a second set of controls (ie. you won't be able to control the CD changer from either the radio head or steering wheel). Before you make a decision, here is another thing to consider, WARRANTY! Who is going to fix this thing when it goes bad? Had you instaled the Saab CD changer when the car was new, the changer would have gotten the full new car warranty (4 years/50K miles) If the changer (or any other accessory for that matter) is installed after the initial purchase, then only the parts warranty (1year/unlimited miles) applies. When I get a RO at the dealership where I work with a CD compliant and find aftermarket CD stuff, I don't work on it. I don't have the training to do it. I simply write on the RO to see the orignal installer for repairs. Good luck, Steve Crowe ASE CMAT/L1, Saab Qualified Level Tech Frederick, MD sjcrowenopsams.com
