I pretty well agree. If you call (for example) Kendall, who makes and markets both conventional and synthetic, they'll tell you straight out that a synthetic's main differences are: 1) Better resistance to oxidation, and 2) A higher "natural" (meaning before the addition of viscosity-improving polymers) viscosity index. They also say that they don't mind selling you the synthetic, but that it's a very large waste of money for most people, and that you still probably can't increase your drain interval because the additive package (the most important part of any oil) will break down LONG before the synthetic base stock. The notion that synthetics are "slicker" is outdated. Any particular oil may be very good in any particular test of its abilities without regard to whether it's a synthetic or not. If all you think you want is the highest score on a 4-ball wear test, use Preparation-H. It'll blow Amsoil into the weeds, but it's a terrible choice for a motor oil. --Eoin On Wed, 03 Feb 1999 16:41:49 -0800, Ken Washington <kenwashnopsam.net> wrote: >I agree with you on the use of mineral versus synthetic oil.
