Synthetics have a wider basic range of viscosity (e.g., some 10W-30 synthetics have no VI extenders at all), so they can be extended more readily to a wider range than conventional oils. OTOH, few if any newer cars require or recommend a 50-weight oil in summer, so I see little reason to use a 5W-50. You'd be better off using a synthetic 0W-30 in winter and 10W-40 in summer. --------------------- John R.
