Drained and replaced the oil yesterday; no more tappet noise. BTW, I replaced all those plastic fittings awhile ago on my "high mileage' Saab. When I pulled the old ones out, none of them had o-rings on them, and they were so brittle from heat exposure that I could crumble them in my fingers. Total parts were about US$35.00; add $16.99 for the valve cover gasket set and you're in business. If you do your own work, use spray adhesive to hold the new gasket to the valve cover as you maneuver it back into place (with credit to Ywan Mason, ace Saab mechanic at http://www.townsendimports.com/default.html, a priceless resource for Saab owners and those who love to repair them (Saabs that is, not the owners)).
